Springfield, Virginia, is a beautiful town with lots to offer for individuals and families, especially if you’re a fan of the outdoors. The weather in Springfield is fantastic in spring, summer, and early fall. Springfield is also one of the many Northern Virginia communities we serve, so we spend a lot of time here. If you’re looking for a great park to visit during one of these wonderful seasons, check out this list of our favorite parks in Springfield, VA!
Lake Accotink Park
7500 Accotink Park Road, Springfield, VA 22150
Lake Accotink Park is by far one of the most popular parks in Springfield, with over 1,800 positive Google reviews. This forested park surrounds Lake Accotink and covers 476 acres.
Lake Accotink Park features:
- Biking, walking, and jogging trails
- A four-mile loop trail for hiking and biking
- Fishing spots (a Virginia fishing license is required)
- Canoe and kayak rentals at the marina
- An antique carousel and a miniature golf course
- A playground, sand volleyball, and basketball courts
- Picnic shelters with grills
One thing to know before you go: swimming, paddleboarding, windsurfing, and motorized boats are all prohibited on the lake.
This park is extremely family-friendly and truly has something for everyone to enjoy. So whether you’re an avid fisherman or you just want to take in some beautiful scenery, Lake Accotink Park is a great option.
Brookfield Park
7417 Floyd Avenue, Springfield, VA 22151
If you’re looking for a smaller park with a “hidden gem” feel, check out Brookfield Park. This 25-acre site wraps around a one-acre pond, and there are lots of different little areas to explore and take in nature.
Brookfield Park features:
- A one-acre pond
- A loop trail around the pond just under half a mile long
- Picnic areas
- Publicly available grills
- A large shelter that seats 100 for bigger groups
- Playground area
- A basketball court, a multi-purpose field, and a bike pump track
Worth noting: there is no fishing allowed at Brookfield, even though the pond is stocked. Restrooms are seasonal and portable, available April through October.
So whether you’re looking to let your kids run around while you relax or you want to do a big picnic with a large group of friends and family, Brookfield Park could be a great option.
Lake Mercer
9500 Silverbrook Road, Fairfax Station, VA 22039 (use 8854 Hooes Road for parking GPS)
Just south of Springfield, Lake Mercer is absolutely stunning in the fall, with gorgeous trees surrounding the lake and trail. The 154-acre park is built around a 43-acre lake, and the trail wraps the whole way around it. The lake feels very hidden and secluded, so you really get a chance to relax and enjoy nature.
Most people go to Lake Mercer and enjoy:
- A 3.5-mile trail encircling the lake, mostly paved
- A three-quarter-mile natural trail section on the north side
- Fishing
- Canoeing and other small craft you can carry in by hand
- Beautiful fall colors
No motors are allowed on the lake and there is no boat ramp, so plan on hand-launching. Visitors’ only real complaint is that parking is tight, with room for about ten vehicles in the gravel lot below the dam, so try to carpool if you’re going in a group.
Fountainhead Regional Park
10875 Hampton Road, Fairfax Station, VA 22039
Although it’s a bit outside of Springfield, Fountainhead Regional Park is a large park with lots to enjoy. The park sits on the Occoquan Reservoir, where visitors can rent a kayak, a paddleboard, or a jon boat. Because of the proximity to the river and reservoir, this park is also great for fishing. Some of the main features at Fountainhead include:
- Single and double kayak, stand-up paddleboard, and 3- and 4-person jon boat rentals
- Fishing from a dedicated pier, with a bait shop on site
- A boat launch ramp for your own craft
- Roughly 15 miles of mountain bike trails
- Shared-use hiking and equestrian trails
- Access to the 19.7-mile Bull Run Occoquan Trail
- Local educational nature programs and naturalist-led paddle tours
Keep in mind that swimming is prohibited in the Occoquan Reservoir under Fairfax County Water Authority regulations, so this is a paddling and fishing park rather than a swimming one.
There are tons of family-friendly activities available at Fountainhead Regional Park, so bring the kids or don’t worry about having to entertain them while you’re out enjoying nature.
Grove Point Park (formerly Franconia District Park)
6432 Bowie Drive, Springfield, VA 22150
If you knew this one as Franconia District Park, you are not out of date by much. The Fairfax County Park Authority Board approved renaming it Grove Point Park on March 8, 2023. The change was needed because Lee District Park had been renamed Franconia Park a few months earlier, and two parks with nearly the same name in the same area was causing confusion with athletic field bookings.
Grove Point Park stands out because of its large, well-maintained fields. This 62-acre park hosts tons of local sporting events and tournaments, but it’s also surrounded by a forested area as well as a few walking trails.
Grove Point Park has:
- Two unlit baseball and softball diamonds
- Two rectangle fields, one with lights and synthetic turf
- Large, open, grassy areas and a slope that’s popular for sledding
- Community garden plots and a plant nursery
- Small walking trails
Fairfax County leash laws apply here, so keep dogs leashed. Restrooms are portable rather than permanent.
So if you’re looking for a place to kick around a soccer ball or play catch, consider visiting Grove Point Park.
Bren Mar Park
5415 Colliers Lane, Alexandria, VA 22312
This 32-acre neighborhood park is quiet and wooded, with Turkeycock Creek running through it. Bren Mar Park is a perfect place to simply enjoy nature, take in the fresh air, and relax without driving far.
This park features:
- Walking trails through the woods
- A small playground for kids
- A picnic shelter that seats 24, with four tables and a grill
- A seasonal portable restroom, available April through October
This is a smaller, low-key park rather than a day-trip destination, which is exactly the appeal if you want a quick walk close to home.
Armistead Boothe Park
520 Cameron Station Boulevard, Alexandria, VA 22304
Armistead Boothe Park is a popular destination for families with children as it features lots of different play areas and activities. The park has a walking trail around the perimeter, but its main attractions include:
- Playground area
- Four pickleball courts and two tennis courts
- Basketball courts
- Playing fields
- Picnic areas and a park shelter
- Public grills
- Restrooms and ADA access
Although Armistead Boothe Park isn’t known for sightseeing, it’s a popular destination for families and worth a visit!
